Goole is a town situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire (England) on the fork of the two rivers Don & Ouse. The sea is only approx. 72 km far. The odd name Goole comes from the Middle English and derives from the word ‘goule’ – means ‘river or canal’. The town was first mentioned in 1362. According to the latest census in 2011, Goole had a population of 19,518. An obvious increase opposite the population census in 2001 (17,600 inhabitants counted). Goole has a multifunctional domestic port. Every year almost 3 Million tons of freight are transferred. Thus, the port of Goole is one of the most important ports at the east coast.
The twin cities of Goole are Złotów (Poland), Rostock (Germany) and since 1961 Gibraltar. The first house – the Lowther Hotel – was built in 1842. When the city of Goole opened its port ceremonially, the community counted 450 people. By now it has reached approx. 19,500 inhabitants.
Its neat downtown has several shops and restaurants. The main shopping mile is called Wesley Square which is a car-free zone. Furthermore, Goole has a recreation centre next to the port as well as the District Hospital located in the north of the town. The town also has a movie theatre ‘The Junction’ and several primary schools as well as a secondary school that is connected with an upper school centre. Living in Goole means to live a calm and relaxed life.
